CARTECAY WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water & Sewerage Authority owns and operates the Cartecay Water Treatment Plant. The plant uses conventional methods to treat surface water from the Cartecay and Ellijay Rivers. The plant is rated to treat 6.2 million gallons per day (mgd).
The plant is permitted through the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA EPD) to withdraw 4.0 mgd from the Cartecay River and 1.5 mgd from the Ellijay River. The plant was constructed in 1970 as a 0.5 mgd plant and has been expanded several times over the years to keep pace with the needs of the community.
The plant has received numerous Gold and Platinum Awards for operational excellence and was named “Plant of the Year” in 2013 for plants in the State of Georgia rated 3.0 and 8.99 mgd in size.

ELLIJAY-GILMER COUNTY WATER RECLAMATION FACILITY
The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water & Sewerage Authority operates an activated sludge, extended air wastewater treatment plant that is permitted by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA EPD) to treat up to 4.0 million gallons per day (mgd). The reclaimed water is discharged into the Coosawattee River, one of the many trout streams found in Gilmer County.
The plant was built in 1970 and has been expanded and upgraded several times to provide wastewater treatment capacity that supports community growth. The plant is currently at 50% capacity and can further be expanded to handle up to 5.0 mgd.
The plant received a Gold Award for operation excellence in 2013.
The plant is equipped with a septic receiving station available for septic haulers to discharge sewerage from Gilmer County septic tanks; additionally, recreational vehicles can discharge sewerage at the station at no charge.
